Prompt #1 – Waking Up To An Alarm Clock

Alecia awoke to the terrible sound of her alarm clock ringing off the table beside her, and clanging to the floor. Without opening her eyes any further, she reached over the side of the bed to retrieve it and turn it off. She knew that the “snooze” button would have to be ignored as she set it back on the table, and began to stretch. Of all days, this was not a good one to wake up with a hang-over. It was her older sister Jamie’s wedding day, and she had been bestowed the Maid of Honor position. Although to her, it was more like the ‘Maid of Horor’.
Jamie wasn’t exactly the easiest person to get along with, and trying to plan a wedding with was proved to be one dramatic episode after another. Jamie did nothing but make the decisions, and expected everyone else to jump and make it happen. Everything had to be just right and exactly perfect, or Jamie would go off the deep-end.
When she finally convinced her eyes to open the rest of the way, she realized that the door to her room was already open, and Jamie was standing there with her hands on her hips.
“Well it’s about time you decided to get up. I have to get in the shower before the hair stylist and make-up artist arrives. I need you to make sure everything is ready before the photographer gets here.”
She turned around and started to walk away.
As she reached the steps in the hallway, she turned around and leaned her head back in the door, “Oh, and make some coffee while you’re at it.”

Update: 11 months, 17 days and counting…

So the most recent news on the wedding has been quite a blow to us.
First we received good news at out Chicago engagement party that we would be going to England for a week and Ireland for a week as a Honeymoon…. AWESOME!
Then, this last weekend, we received terrible news that broke my heart in an instant. The venue we had planned on using for our wedding reception informed us that they no longer wanted to do it because they “have never done it before and don’t really want to start…”.  The most unfortunate aspect of that last part is that we both work there. *Ugh…
So now the search for a good and affordable reception venue continues…. and it’s not looking very encouraging thus far…

If you’ve ever been to, or planned a wedding yourself, you know just how much work goes into it. The big picture is the easy part, the details are what will kill ya. For as long as I’ve spent dreaming about my perfect wedding day, I’ve spent as much time recently working out details and hoping that we can have the night of our dreams on a tight budget. I must say, we’ve been very lucky so far. We got our reception venue a lot cheaper than we expected to, we made our own announcements on www.nextdayfliers.com at a crazy cheap price, and our engagement photo session was free! Now my biggest concers are food (see my post “The Search for Food”), decorations, the ceremony…and the flowers. I know I have plenty of time still, but I can’t help but feel a sense of urgency. I have so many ideas that I don’t know which direction I want to go. I wish I knew someone who does flowers or party decorating/planning… it would make a few things a whole lot easier. Our engagement party here in St. Louis is set for the Sunday after my birthday at his parent’s house.
I have to keep telling myself that everything will be ok and that it will all come together great. I have to remember that I have over a year still because we planned it that way for a reason. Just breath Chrissi… everything will come together in time.  I see all these wedding shows on TV where they help couples have the wedding of their dreams… I wish for once we could be so lucky. Until that time comes… the headache and excitement continue.  The rest of my life with the man I love is worth it all.

Just a quick little update. I added the SocialVibe widget to my blog and would really appreciate everyone’s help. All you have to do is click on it, watch a short trailer, and Showtime will donate money to the Children’s Miracle Network. I’ve always been one to help causes involving children, and I know this is a very good, and very legit cause. Money will go to children’s hospitals around the globe. Please help! Thanks!

New Age Media Speaking Out

•June 20, 2009 • 3 Comments

Freedom of speech. Our first amendment, and our most controversial inalienable right.
Over history, communication has evolved and changed to meet the needs of just about everyone. In the beginning, humans relied on spoken word and cryptic messages… today, we rely on the speed of technology at our fingertips. The evolution of technology and communication is perhaps the best evidence of human advancement. It is unfortunate however, that one of our biggest freedoms is one of the biggest things dividing us socially.
In the last few years, I’ve noticed that despite strong opposition and criticism, some people are exercising their first amendment right to speak for those who have no voice, and educate people on subjects that mainstream media overlook. For example…

Michael Moore: Love him, hate him, you can’t get around the fact that the man is brilliant. No matter what your POV is on him or his films, talent is talent. Some people think he’s a fraud, or that he twists facts to suit his agenda. I think those people are afraid of hearing the truth. It’s scary knowing that some people really think that our government is truthful and honest with the American people. Michael Moore takes everyday issues and reveals them in a light that really gives you something to think about. He has touched on everything from gun control, school shootings, global warming, the auto industry, 9/11, and the American health care system. Out of all his films, the one that has caused some of the most controversy is “Sicko”. I really don’t think people took him as seriously as they should have until “Sicko” came out. With that one film, he open a lot of peoples eyes to a very serious problem this country has. Would you want to decide which body part to have sewn back on? Would you sit back and calmly watch as one of your loved ones was blatantly denied the care they need for a life-threatening illness?

Zeitgeist:  A fairly unknown documentary that features 3 main topics of interest, the Federal Reserve, the “truth” about 9/11, and the origin of Christianity. There are many conspiracy theories out there about 9/11, but the one presented in this well made film is probably the most believable one I’ve heard in the past 7 1/2 years. The segment about the Fed is quite interesting as well… it points out some interesting facts that our government doesn’t want American citizens to know. As far as the segment on religion… I happened to find it quite intriguing, if not amusing. I used to consider myself a religious person, but I started asking questions and coming to my own conclusions that just didn’t fit conventional, traditional “religion”. The facts presented in the film are shocking to say the least. Many religious fanatics and conservatives have tried to “disprove” this film, but the facts are written in the history of man. Even if it’s just out of curiosity and you don’t agree with what’s presented, I suggest that everyone see this documentary. Are you willing to question what you believe in?

Bill Mahr:  Yes…I admit, I’m a fan. I didn’t really know much about him outside of his comedy until he made “Religulous”. I saw it in a small local theater when it first came out, and I was awe-struck. I have never before seen such a brilliant and blatant exam of organized religion as a whole. No matter what you faith is, you have to admit that he asks some really good questions, and make a lot of excellent points. He examines the heart of religion, and interviews some very…interesting people. Some of the people that he talked to were the epitome of religious fanaticism. You know things have gone too far when you’re making money by convincing people that you’re the second coming of Jesus Christ while you’re sitting there in an Armani suit. His TV show “Real Time With Bill Mahr” is probably the best panel talk show I’ve ever seen. He has guests from all religious beliefs, political positions, career backgrounds, and talents… and yet, he never loses the spark that gives the show life. He’s funny, articulate, intelligent, inquisitive, and isn’t afraid of any consequences. Screw right-winged AM radio, there should be more people like Mahr telling it like it really is.

Aside from these 3 big contributors, G4 has a new show called “G4 Underground” that presents reports on topics that, to many networks, are taboo. Medical marijuana, porn, real life superheroes, professional wrestling, new “underground” drugs, ect. Well worth the watch, Morgan Webb does a fantastic job of hosting the show as well.

I’m proud to be an American. There may be a lot of things about our government and society that I don’t like or don’t agree with… but these people have made me realize that our First Amendment right is the most important one we have. The world would be one hell of a wasteland if we weren’t allowed to speak out and be heard. Advocates for censorship are trying to rewind the progress of human evolution and technology. Speak up! Let your voice be heard! Fight for what you believe in, or you’ll be just another face in the crowd.

Kiener Plaza – St. Louis

Here are the pictures I took the other day, when Curt and I took his mom to see the place we want to get married. It’s perfect… it’s outdoors, with shelter if necessary, it has pretty flowers everywhere, it’s plenty big enough, and the waterfall will make a perfect backdrop. What do you think?

This will be the backdrop of the ceremony.

I’m soooooo excited! I can’t wait ’til my mom and best friend come down here so I can show them. Curt’s mom thinks it’s perfect too!

Hell… we’re already doing something that NO ONE… that’s right, no one… has done in St. Louis before, by having our reception at Wild Country. This is just going to be the beginning.

Top 5 Reasons I Love My New LG Incite

•June 18, 2009 • Leave a Comment

This is the first “smart phone” I’ve owned (I don’t think a Blackberry Pearl counts)…and I love it! I had to get this one when my fiance dropped his in a glass of tea, and had to use mine. Any help, incite, or tips from other users would be great…I still haven’t figured everything out yet!

5.) It was FREE from AT&T (Can’t beat that deal!)

4.) It’s completely touch screen. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for someone with abnormally large fingers.

3.) No matter what you do, the screen rotates with you…in 3 directions. This makes typing a text message MUCH easier as it turns into more of a keyboard. Picture taking is also much easier this way.

2.) The camera on this phone is phenominal! Once you discover all your options, it’s fun to play with them to see what kind of pictures you can get.

1.) Almost everything is fully customizable. From backgrounds, to fonts, to what kind of noise it makes (if any) when you press buttons and dial a number.

1.5) The speed of uploading things to and from a computer is crazy fast.

* As much as I love my new phone, I still can’t figure out how to use a ringtone that I downloaded from my computer. Oh well…it could be worse.

I may not have a new IPhone, or one of the Blackberry smart phones, but I think that LG is giving all of them a run for their money. I don’t use all the gadgets on my phone, and don’t want to pay extra for some that are available. It’s just nice knowing the options are there.

My tattoo…Coming soon

•June 17, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’m getting my first tattoo soon! I decided a long time ago what I wanted and where I want it… but I’ve just never had the time and money to go get it done. Curt and I were talking about it the other day and I told him how important it is to me that I get it before the wedding. He talked to one of our close friends, and he’s going to do it for me!  The images I’m posting below are just ideas.

Like I said… I designed what I want myself. The difference between these designs and my own is on mine, I have flames coming up off the top of the heart behind the crown, and if he can do it, I would like the knot work to weave into a shamrock at the top. I’d also like to add a little banner that says “Tu Me Grah”, meaning “I Love You” in Gaelic.
It’s important for me to get it before the wedding because of what the symbol represents.  The claddaugh is very old and rich in Celtic tradition. It’s meaning “Love, Friendship, and Loyalty” is meant to remind it’s wearer of a special bond. I won’t even have to put any names on it… I’ll know exactly what it means.

The Search For Food

•June 17, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’m trying to figure out the best way to feed people at my wedding on a budget. Catering is fairly expensive, but I read a suggestion in one of my magazines that said sometimes Culinary Arts schools will do it at cost. I’m not sure what the best rout to take would be. Here are some options…

1.) Catering (I’ve seen ones around here for anywhere from $5 a plate to $30)

2.) Culinary Schools (If they will do it at a cheaper rate)

3.) Homemade (would require a lot of food and a lot of time)

4.) Do cocktails and H’our D’Ouvres only (good finger food)

Decisions, decisions, decisions…I wish I could afford to feed almost 400 people a sit-down gourmet meal, but that just can’t happen. So now what?

Awesome news! Curt and I were driving through downtown St. Louis last night talking about places to have our reception. We spotted Kiener Plaza …
This is a picture of it during the day. Imagine what it’s like at night with the waterfall and fountain all lit up. Anyway… we parked the car and walked around for a while. We both pictured what it would be like to have our ceremony there, and we both fell in love. To make it even better, we got online once we got back home to check out the price, and it’s cheaper than our original idea of having it at the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park. Kiener Plaza would be easier to get to for everyone, it’s centrally located in the city, and there’s plenty of cool places in the surrounding area of downtown to take pictures!
The more that things come together, the better I start to feel about all the planning.
